THE RETURN

AFEW years back, I wrote a book called Fishing with My Old Guy. If you are enjoying this book, you might enjoy that one also. It detailed a trip that four men made (I should know, because I was one of them) into the extreme, way up there in northern Quebec. Gordon, Paulo, Gary and I were in search of the world’s biggest speckled trout. Scientists say that such a fish is likely to live in one of two places: northern Quebec or Argentina. When I give public readings from Fishing with My Old Guy, I do not disclose whether or not the great beast was taken. (The Publisher advised this policy.) I do, however, tell the assembled that I am working on the book’s sequel, Fishing with My Old Guy in Argentina.

Some time after that adventure I returned with my Old Guy to the extreme. We had a couple of different companions this time, Rick and Paul. We caught fish, some of them pretty hefty, but nothing slated for the record books. The first trip had been scuppered by bad weather, and plenty of it. This time around things were beautiful, maybe even too much so, because someone concluded, “It’s too warm for the big fish to start moving.”

The Publisher was expecting another volume, but I knew I was in trouble. “Guys,” I complained, “I can’t write one book where the weather’s too horrible and then another where it’s too nice.”

Then I had a little inspiration. When I got back to Toronto, I phoned up the Publisher in Vancouver. “We had a great trip,” I told him.

“Is there a book in it?”

“Not a book,” I said, “A poem. A grand epic poem.”

I fully expected the Publisher to ring off abruptly, thereby releasing me from any obligations. But being the Publisher, he was silent for only a moment. “That could be good,” he judged.

“I said a poem.”

“Excellent,” said the Publisher, who is a man of enthusiasms. “When will you be finished?”

You will see that my piece is hardly an epic, and it might not even be a poem. But I hope it conveys some sense of our journey.
